Increasing Independence With Programming for Public Housing Residents

Mar 9, 2023

PMHA participates in numerous programs and offers many services which help us maximize funding and resources for participants. This article explores some of our programs and services and how they benefit Portage County residents.

Home Ownership Program

PMHA is committed to helping participants achieve their dream of homeownership. Our Homeownership Program is designed to support participants who wish to purchase a home and use their Section 8 voucher toward a monthly mortgage payment. Since the program was implemented in 2001, PMHA’s Homeownership Program has made it possible for seventy-six (76) households to purchase homes.

Moving to Work Program

PMHA is one of three (3) public housing authorities (PHA) in Ohio that are currently part of the Moving To Work (MTW) program. PMHA is the only Ohio PHA that has participated in MTW since its inception.  MTW provides PMHA with the opportunity to design and test innovative, locally focused strategies that use Federal dollars more efficiently, help residents find employment and become self-sufficient, and increase housing choices for low-income families.

MTW gives PMHA exemptions from many existing public housing and voucher rules and more flexibility with how we use Federal funds. It’s a way for our team to use the opportunities presented by MTW to inform HUD about ways to better address local community needs.

Capital Fund Program

PMHA’s Resident Services Department is committed to helping individuals and families reach their full potential. We connect Public Housing residents and Section 8 participants with referrals and supportive services in partnership with the local community. Our goal is to provide the support necessary to guide participants toward self-sufficiency by linking them to services that increase income, reduce or eliminate welfare assistance, and foster economic independence. For elderly and disabled residents, we provide links to supportive services that help participants live independently with improved quality of life while avoiding more costly forms of care.
