Understand More About the Process for Obtaining Section 8 Housing Assistance

The Housing Choice Voucher program, also known as Section 8, is Portage Metropolitan Housing Authority’s (PMHA) largest housing assistance program. The Voucher program is funded by the federal government through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The program increases affordable housing choices for low-income households by allowing families to choose privately-owned rental units. PMHA pays the landlord the difference between 30%-50% of the household’s income and the agencies payment standard (100% of HUD’s Fair Market Rent). The rent must be reasonable upon what comparable units rent for on the open market.

Do You Qualify for Section 8?

PMHA bases eligibility for Section 8 vouchers on several factors, including but not limited to:

  • Income
  • Citizenship status
  • Criminal Background Information

Once your application is submitted a full review of all eligibility criteria will be completed to determine if you are eligible for voucher issuance.
