Finding affordable housing has become increasingly difficult for disabled individuals and seniors. Whether you’re figuring out what type of low-income housing is right for you or seeking low-income senior citizen housing in Portage County, Ohio, PMHA has a variety of programs to support you.
The Housing Affordability Crisis
Housing affordability is at an all-time low, making it challenging for disabled and older adults to find homes within their budgets. This has led to a scarcity of options for senior and disabled housing. For those seeking assistance in finding affordable and safe places to call home, PMHA is here to help. We connect disabled individuals, seniors, and other individuals and families with housing programs that fit their needs – from a low-income house for the elderly to comfortable housing for disabled individuals.
PMHA’s Public Housing Program
PMHA owns and operates over 300 housing units throughout Portage County. Senior and disabled housing options are located in various communities, including Kent and Ravenna. Our housing programs offer clean, safe living spaces at affordable rates, helping residents secure stable, long-term homes.
Section 8 – Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program
PMHA’s Housing Choice Voucher program expands affordable housing choices for low-income households by allowing qualified households to rent homes from private landlords, giving them the freedom to choose a property that best meets their needs. A monthly subsidy is paid to the property owner on behalf of the household.
Key Programs and Services
PMHA offers more than just affordable housing – our programs and services help residents become more independent and improve their quality of life. PMHA connects residents with resources for employment and supportive services, helps people become homeowners, and more.
Resident Opportunity and Supportive Services (ROSS) Program
The ROSS Program supports residents with services such as job training, financial literacy, and life skills workshops with the goal of helping them achieve long-term self-sufficiency. This program assists seniors and individuals with disabilities in managing their homes and finances, ensuring participants have the resources they need to thrive.
Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program
The FSS Program is geared towards helping those assisted under the Housing Choice Voucher program to achieve financial independence by linking them with supportive services and resources provided by PMHA, social service, and other partner agencies. Under the program an escrow account is established for the participant. The account is held until the program is successfully completed. FSS provides participants with educational opportunities, career development resources, and savings programs that can help move them towards greater self-sufficiency. This program can be a game changer in reaching your financial goals.
Homeownership Program
In addition to the pre-purchase education, counseling, and support, the program provides participating households with monthly mortgage assistance payments. With the support of PMHA, many participants have gone from renting to owning a home, ensuring long-term stability and independence.
