HUD & PMHA Work Hand in Hand

Oct 26, 2021

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Portage Metropolitan Housing Authority (PMHA) are organizations committed to ensuring all Americans have a decent home and a suitable living environment.

What Is HUD?

HUD is a federal agency responsible for national policy and programs that address America’s housing needs. The agency improves communities through development initiatives and enforcement of fair housing laws.

HUD administers programs, including rental assistance through Section 8 vouchers for low-income households, along with public or subsidized housing for low-income individuals and families.

How Is PMHA Involved with HUD?

PMHA administers the Section 8 and Public Housing programs for Portage County. Both programs are funded through HUD. PMHA creates and maintains affordable housing for Portage County residents and connects members of the community with the services they need to increase self-sufficiency, economic stability and improve quality of life in general.

PMHA & HUD Work Together

Both PMHA and HUD recognize that access to decent, affordable housing has a major impact on quality of life. Having a place to call home improves overall health and wellbeing and contributes to the success of communities.

PMHA administers a range of programs; a few of which are summarized below.

  • Moving to Work Program: PMHA participates in HUD’s Moving to Work program. Moving to Work is a demonstration program for public housing authorities (PHAs) that provides them the opportunity to design and evaluate innovative, locally designed strategies that use Federal dollars more efficiently, help residents find employment and become self-sufficient, as well as increase housing choices for low-income families.
  • Homeownership Program: Helps families assisted under the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing participants to use their housing assistance to purchase a home. Homeownership program participants receive a monthly homeownership subsidy to assist in meeting homeownership expenses.
  • Capital Fund Program: Provides funds for the development, financing, and modernization of public housing developments and for management improvements.
